What You Need to Know About Custom Foot Orthotics

What Are Custom Foot Orthotics?

Custom foot orthotics are specially made insoles that fit inside your shoes. They’re designed to support your feet, relieve unwanted pressure, and help improve how your body moves. Unlike store-bought inserts, custom orthotics are built specifically for YOU, based on a detailed assessment by your healthcare provider.

They can help with common issues like:

  •  Heel pain
  • Pain in the Ball of the Foot (Metatarsalgia)
  • Over Pronation/Supination (excessive rolling in or out)
  • Repetitive injuries to the lower limb/feet
  •  Arch pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Bone Spurs
  • Sore knees
  • Back discomfort
  • Arthritis
  • Foot Issues Related to Diabetes

When your feet are out of alignment, the rest of your body often has to work harder to compensate.

At Crux, we use high quality  3D scans or physical  impressions of your feet along with an order form created by your assessing clinician to design orthotics that fit your feet, activity level, and specific needs.

Whether you're on your feet all day, training for a race, or just want to move more comfortably, orthotics can help reduce strain and support your natural movement.

They’re a simple but powerful tool for improving comfort, posture, and quality of life—one step at a time.

What to Expect

Assessment

Fitting and Ongoing Support

Manufacturing

Your orthotic journey starts with a thorough assessment by a licensed healthcare professional. This includes a biomechanical exam, gait analysis, and a 3D scan or cast of your feet. Your clinician will evaluate symptoms, posture, and foot structure to determine if custom foot orthotics are right for you. Be sure to take some time to learn about your private insurance/benefit coverage prior to booking your assessment. Ask your assessing clinician for guidance if you are unsure.

Once your assessment is complete, your order is sent to Crux Laboratory. We use advanced design software and sophisticated 3D printing methods coupled with high-quality materials to build truly custom orthotics—designed specifically for your foot shape, footwear, and daily needs. Every device is handcrafted and inspected for quality by a Certified Pedorthist before it leaves our lab.

Fitting and Ongoing Support

When your orthotics are ready, your clinician will fit them to your shoes to ensure proper alignment and comfort. You'll receive break-in instructions and guidance on how to get the most out of your orthotics. If anything feels off, adjustments can be made—we’re here to support your long-term comfort and mobility.  Extend the life of your orthotics with our refurbishment service. We replace worn top covers, refresh padding, and inspect for any structural wear so your devices stay comfortable, effective, and ready to support you every step of the way.

How to Get Orthotics

Who Can Provide Custom Foot Orthotics?

In Canada, Certified Pedorthists, Podiatrists, Chiropractors, Orthotists, and Chiropodists are licensed and approved to assess for and dispense custom foot orthotics. These professionals are trained to evaluate lower limb biomechanics and recommend orthotics that meet medical and insurance standards.

How do I know who to see?

What to consider when selecting a clinician?

1. Clinical Expertise
Choose a provider who understands foot and lower limb biomechanics and has experience diagnosing and treating the specific issues you're facing (e.g. plantar fasciitis, flat feet, arthritis, sports injuries).

2. Scope of Practice
Ensure they are licensed and authorized to assess for and dispense custom orthotics. In Canada, this includes certified pedorthists, podiatrists, chiropractors, orthotists, and chiropodists.

3. Approach to Care
Look for someone who takes the time to assess your gait, posture, lifestyle, and footwear—not just someone who takes a quick scan or mold. A good provider offers a tailored plan, not a one-size-fits-all product.

4. Follow-Up and Support
Ask about follow-up care. Will they check the fit and function after delivery? Can they make modifications if needed? Ongoing support makes a big difference in your outcome.

5. Communication and Comfort
You should feel heard and understood. The best outcomes come from a collaborative relationship where your goals, concerns, and preferences are taken into account.

6. Clinic Setup and Tools
Modern tools (like 3D scanning or pressure mapping) can help with precision, but what matters most is how the provider uses them alongside their clinical judgment.
